ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is a numbering system for serial publications. ISSN is a numeric code and has fixed length.

Benefits
An ISSN can be assigned to any serial publication, whether it is printed or available on any other medium (CD-ROM, floppy disk, online publications).

Limitations
An ISSN can only be used with serial publications.

Technical Specifications
ISSN is an 8 digit number encoded using EAN-13 symbology with "977" as the prefix. The eigth digit of the ISSN is a control digit calculated using a modulo 11 algorithm from the preceding 7 digits.

Additional Information
The basic difference between ISBN and ISSN is that an ISSN is assigned to serial publications; ISBN is assigned to monographs ("books"). An ISSN can be assigned to a series of monographs as such; and an ISBN will be assigned to each separate book of the series.
